ROCK POOL (2025) is an experimental audiovisual work which details the diverse beauty and drama of intertidal ocean zones. Informed by the documentary mode as much as surrealist automatism, this piece combines high quality, observational footage with experimental sound and editing methods. Miniscule beings appear at titanic scale as evocative sound cues facilitate a trance of direct-being with nature. The film’s hypnotic flow mirrors natural rhythms, wherein light, color, and movement may guide human interest. Can viewing experiences at the edge of sensory eco-filmmaking awaken archetypal expressions of nature within ourselves?
A cauldron of primordial wonder sitting right at our feet, rock pools remain one of the most captivating and accessible ecological resources of our national landscape as well as a vital indicator for the health of our planet. These ephemeral and transitory ocean portals grip the awareness of child and adult alike through stunning close encounters with the earthly extra-terrestrial. At SOUP, we hope that, in displaying the importance of these ecological resources, we not only promote insight for conservation and education, but do this in tandem with a space for reflection upon attitudes of wellbeing and mindful awareness.
ROCK POOL is the first of many films whereby we explore these interactive processes and invite audiences to rediscover nature’s wonders — fostering mindfulness, ecological awareness, and deeper reflection on our connection to the world around us.
